this project is inspired by chalk lithograph artist, Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945). living through both world wars, heavily impacted as a German Jewish person herself, and by the loss of her son, Kollwitz used carefully planned, expressive marks to encapsulate the grief, loss, and misery the wars were bringing to working class people and families in Germany, accompanied by imagery of the deep love between mothers and children. she also includes lots of skeletons as symbols of death in her etchings and lithograph prints, and, in her later prints, seems to come to terms with death as an inevitable force of nature.
